1998 Season

  • Earned Pac 10 championship and trip to Rose Bowl.
  • Finished ranked #5 (BCS) and #8 (UPI & ESPN/USA Today).
  • Won 10 games in back-to-back seasons for only the second time in history and back-to-back league titles for the first time since 1982-83.
  • UCLA had won a school-record 20 straight games, doubling the previous longest winning streak in school history.
  • UCLA's record of 20-4 in the last two years is the best in the Pac-10, as is its league record of 15-1.
  • UCLA set season school records for total offense (5,847 yards), passing yards (3,658 yards) and passing touchdowns (29).
  • Both offensive tackle Kris Farris and quarterback Cade McNown earned consensus All-American honors.
  • Cade McNown set UCLA season records for passing yards (3,470) and total offense (3,652 yards), breaking marks he set last year. He was named winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented to the nation's top senior quarterback, and placed third in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He was one of three finalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award and one of three finalists for the Maxwell Award for outstanding all-around player. He was also selected Pac-10 co-Offensive Player of the Year and co-first-team quarterback. In addition, he was one of five finalists for the Football News Offensive Player of the Year Award.
  • Kris Farris was selected the recipient of the 1998 Outland Trophy, presented to the nation's top interior lineman.
  • Tailback DeShaun Foster tied the school record for touchdowns in a game by scoring four times (three rushing, one receiving) against USC. He was the first true freshman to score four times in a game and his 12 TDs this season are a school record for true freshmen.
  • Foster was selected first-team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News and Football News. Inside linebacker Ryan Nece was also a first-team Freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News.
